Number of mainland tourists to Hong Kong increases for first time since last May

The number of mainland tourists visiting Hong Kong in July increased for the first time since last May, according to statistics released by the Hong Kong Tourism Board on Wednesday.

July saw a total of 3.9 million mainland visitors, a 2.2 per cent increase from last July. The number of mainland tourists had been falling since May 2015, when compared to the same month of the previous year.

Overall, the total number of mainland tourists for the first seven months fell from last year, marking a 8.8 per cent decrease as 24.3 million individuals visited Hong Kong between January and July this year.

Hong Kong saw a total of 1,1 million non-mainland tourists in July, a 3.7 per cent increase from July of last year. There was a 32.4 per cent increase in South Korean tourists from last July. The number of tourists from Philippines also increased 19.8 per cent.
