Marbella fundraisers help a Kenyan village

THANKS to the determination of Swede Sten Kvarfordh, a great deal of time and effort has been devoted in assisting the Kenyan village of Mutomo to obtain drinking water and working with the Timeless Gallery in Marbella and Rotary Club Marbella Guadalmina, the first stage of bringing clean water to the area has been achieved.

Mikael Segelstöm of the Timeless Gallery organised a special art auction during 2015, with the resulting funds raised being channelled through Rotary Club Marbella Guadalmina to the special project. After several months of hard work and expenditure of more than €50,000, an area which is known for bracken and salty water now has a clean bore hole, which can supply water via water tanks and water kiosks to several thousand people, two schools and many farmers.

Women and children who previously had to walk for miles in order to collect clean water are delighted that they can now obtain this most important of life giving resources easily and at no cost to themselves, releasing them to undertake more productive work whether in the home or at school.

The project will continue to expand as more funds are raised, and this is a perfect example of the sort of assistance that the mixed expat community can and does give to those who are in a far less privileged position.
